Chinese porcelain is arguably the greatest achievement in global ceramics history. Join an expert in Chinese decorative arts to explore the history of this unique material.

An indicator of the importance of Chinese porcelain is the world record prices set by great examples. This conversation focuses on blue-and-white and monochrome porcelains from the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties (12th to 19th centuries). Characteristics of porcelain, methods of production, popular shapes and motifs, and works made for domestic and international markets will be presented with masterpieces from museum collections.

Led by an expert on Chinese ceramics and decorative arts, John Johnston, this interactive seminar will explore the vast history of porcelain. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of how porcelain is created and why certain pieces are extremely rare and valuable.

Dr. John Johnston earned his Ph.D. in art history from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He is a specialist in Chinese ceramics and decorative art and traditional Buddhist art. Dr. Johnston served as Curator of Asian Art at the San Antonio Museum of Art and other American museums and was an Assistant Professor at the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong. Dr. Johnston has lived in Asia for many years including five years in Greater China and three years of art historical fieldwork in Bhutan.

Great introduction to the subject.

Excellent talk. I knew very little about Chinese porcelain and came away wanting to know more. Dr. Johnson presented a good balance of introductory information with expert insider's knowledge.

Interesting Look at the History of Chinese Porcelain with Dr. John Johnston

Generally well done Conversation.

It would have been even better with some additional slides in the beginning. After two or three slides, John Johnston talked for some time with no accompanying slides. Some timeline chart showing different periods of Chinese porcelain would have also helped.
