The seminar will explain the background to the UK voting to leave the European Union, trace developments on the issue since the referendum, and discuss the implications of Brexit for the future of the country.

""Take back control"". ""We want our country back"". ""Brexit means Brexit!""

Slogans such as these have dominated political discourse in the UK since the country's 2016 referendum on membership of the European Union. The vote to leave was the biggest political event in the country since the end of the Second World War and came as a huge shock to governing elites across the globe. However, a closer look at the UK's political culture, constitutional make-up and evolving postwar relationship with the European Union, as well as popular perceptions of what EU membership meant for many of its citizens, suggest that Brexit should not have been such a big surprise.

This seminar will show how the seeds of Brexit were sown many years before the referendum, as UK journalists and politicians developed their own unique interpretation of what the European Union *is* and seeks to achieve. It will then illustrate how these perceptions played a key role in the process of leaving the EU and trying to negotiate a subsequent trade deal. This led to a type of Brexit that its proponents neither promised nor predicted during the referendum and one which could result in the country breaking up.

Led by an expert on UK public policy, Dr. Peter Eckersley, this interactive seminar will explore the key issues associated with Brexit. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of why the UK voted to leave the European Union and the implications of this decision for the country's future.

Dr Peter Eckersley is a Senior Research Fellow in Public Policy and Management at Nottingham Trent University, UK, and a Research Associate at the Leibniz Institute for Research on Society and Space, Erkner, Germany. He holds a PhD in Political Science, as well as Bachelor and Masters degrees in European Union Studies, from Newcastle University in the UK. He has published widely on issues of public policy in the UK and Germany, focusing particularly on how relationships between different levels of governance - from the EU down to municipalities - influence how states try to achieve their policy objectives. Prior to completing his PhD, he spent ten years advising UK local government officers on policy and recommended management approaches.

To make this come alive, you need a dynamic presenter

Not a doubt in my mind that Dr. Eckersley knows the material. The presentation was just so dry that I gave up after 45 minutes.

Understanding Brexit

I was really hoping to learn more about Brexit than what had been reported in the news, but that did not happen. The questions asked during the Q&A were great, so that saved the presentation a bit.
