Event Description:
Nicknamed “the breadbasket of Europe,” Ukraine is a newly independent post-Soviet state with an illustrious history. It is a land forever coveted and conquered by major empires because of its central location and its amazingly fertile black soil.
This interactive seminar will discuss Ukraine’s history and culture, including the distinct stories of Eastern and Western Ukraine, its balancing act between Russia and Poland, Western and Eastern Europe, Orthodox Christianity, and Catholicism. Participants will learn about the beautiful Kiev: one of the oldest Eastern-European cities, the seventh-largest city in Europe, and the birthplace of Eastern Orthodox Christianity. Full of ancient churches and monasteries, the Kiev of today is a modern cultural capital.
Led by an expert on Ukraine, Dr. Nina Wieda, this interactive seminar will introduce Ukraine’s past and present and bring the country to life for seminar participants. Designed to inform curiosity, participants will come away with an increased understanding of Ukrainian history.
