This conversation provides participants with an overview of Leonardo da Vinci’s life in Florence, from his humble beginnings with Verrocchio to his masterpieces within Palazzo Vecchio – paired with those of Michelangelo.

Moving from Leonardo’s early life in Vinci and Florence, through the observation of the Baptism of Jesus, the conversation will trace the beginnings of Leonardo’s artistic activity in the workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio, painter, sculptor, and master of a generation of great artists, including Sandro Botticelli, Pietro Perugino, Domenico Ghirlandaio, and Francesco Botticini.

Together we will then consider the Annunciation, Leonardo’s first independent work, to reflect on the artist’s incredibly innovative character, on his study of perspective, and his fine draughtsmanship. Leonardo’s first Florentine production concluded with the Adoration of the Magi, the masterpiece left uncompleted when the artist left for Milan in 1481. The return of Leonardo in Florence by 1503 brought him to the center of critical events for the political and artistic history of Florence, such as the decoration of the main hall in the government’s palace, Palazzo Vecchio, where he found himself confronting Michelangelo’s work.

Led by Florentine art historian Alessandra Becucci, this interactive seminar will introduce us to the relationship between Leonardo and his hometown, leaving us all eager to see in-person the Florentine masterpieces of the most celebrated, and most mysterious Renaissance artist.

This conversation is part of a series. Each seminar can be joined independently and in any order.

Very enjoyable look at some of the treasures of the Ufuzzi. I liked how some of the earlier sketches showed a little different variation over the finished product and it was good to learn about Da Vinci’s lesser known works. Can’t wait to go back in person!
