Henry VIII had already chosen his third wife before he executed his second, marrying Jane Seymour within days of Anne Boleyn’s death. Jane, who strove to present herself as the ideal Tudor woman, was queen during a turbulent period of Henry’s reign, coming into conflict with him over their differing views on the Dissolution of the Monasteries. When she died giving birth, Henry, unusually, did not have a new candidate for a wife in mind. As a result, he was forced onto the European marriage market, searching the royal courts of Europe for a suitable spouse. He selected a German princess, Anne of Cleves, as his bride, only to find himself unable to consummate the marriage after taking a dislike to her appearance. The marriage was annulled only six months later.
Led by Dr. Elizabeth Norton, a British historian and expert on the Tudor period, this conversation will look at the lives and queenships of Jane Seymour and Anne of Cleves, as well as considering the historical context of their lives. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the political roles played by two of Henry VIII's more obscure queens.

Dr Elizabeth Norton is a British historian, specialising in the Tudor period. She has degrees from both Oxford and Cambridge universities and King's College London. She is the author of twelve books, including 'The Hidden Lives of Tudor Women', 'The Temptation of Elizabeth Tudor' and biographies of four of Henry VIII's wives. She regularly appears as an expert on television.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

A Fine Tudor Talk

Of all the talks Dr. Norton has given on Tudor History, I've enjoyed the one about Jane Seymour and Anne of Cleves the most, possibly because these wives of Henry VIII are lesser known. I learned so much, and she made them come alive for me!
