This seminar aims at deciphering the Syrian conflict and its consequences on the country and its population, from the first demonstrations of 2011 demanding respect and freedom to the destruction of today.

The Syrian war is an internal conflict, started as the regime of Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s president, initiated a violent crackdown on the peaceful popular uprising that engulfed the country starting in March 2011 and began to challenge its authority and the promise of “al-Assad for eternity” that had been repeated over and over by official propaganda. Through the years, external actors have played an increasingly important role, either directly or by proxy, with the effect of regionalizing and internationalizing the conflict, beyond the borders of Syria.

This seminar will first provide a good understanding of the Syrian conflict – its actors, its developments, and the current situation. Second, it will offer an in-depth description of what Syria, a cradle of civilization, is today, after ten years of war, a country whose cities, landscapes, economy, and society is deeply changed through large-scale destruction of its built environment and mass displacement of its population. Indeed, ten years after the start of the uprising, more than half of Syria’s pre-conflict population of twenty-one million has been displaced, either seeking refuge abroad or somewhere else in their own country. Syria’s neighboring countries are transformed as well by the presence of Syrian refugees: Syria produces the most refugees in the world and has the highest number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

Led by an expert on Syria, Leïla Vignal, this interactive seminar will explore the dynamics and consequences for the country of the Syrian conflict. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of where Syria does stand in the early 2020s, as well as of what war does to a country and its population.

Dr. Leïla Vignal is a geographer teaching in France at the University of Rennes-2. She has been working on and in the Middle East for years. She has extensively published on Syria. Her new book, "Wartorn. The Unmaking of Syria (2011-2021)" (Hurst Publishers/Oxford University Press) will be published in 2021.

A Nation Torn Asunder

Dr. Vignal gave us a straightforward look at the complex topic of a nation caught up in a war. She had plenty of helpful maps and good timelines to explain the progression of the destruction of Syria as a functioning state.

Comments re class on Syria: 10 years of conflict

Dr. Vignal did such an outstanding presentation covering so much material in a short period of time. I did not know how/why the war had started and what was happening in Syria now. She explained everything so well. Unfortunately, I think, most Americans get very little international news. We saw quite abit of the refugees who fled and the bombed cities, but nothing in depth and now we see nor hear anything. It is a terrible state of affairs and that is why I appreciated this seminar so much. I wish this video could be shown in our schools, etc. We need to know more. Thank you, Dr. Vignal....

Great overview!

This was a remarkably comprehensive overview of a profoundly complex conflict, conveyed in a brief period of time. The maps, photos and stats were useful and added to the presentation. Thanks!
