Launching in spring 2023 at Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the world's largest retrospective exhibition will explore the career of Johannes Vermeer. This once-in-a-lifetime experience will bring together more Vermeer pictures in one venue than ever before.

Our Context expert, Sabry Amroussi, was asked to write one of the accompanying publications and will be sharing out a teaser of this remarkable project, exclusively for Context clients. Lecture details are provided below.

During this highly personal examination of the artist's portfolio, Sabry will unravel the mysteries behind Vermeer's most popular masterpieces. Together we will discover the many hidden erotic undertones in the work of Vermeer, the many layers of meaning, and above all, the exquisite painting technique that truly earned this enigmatic artist the nickname "The Sphinx of Delft."

Lecture One – Delft and Beginnings:
We will begin by discussing the city of Delft in the 17th century and the painters that inspired Vermeer. Masters like Pieter de Hooch and the enigmatic Carel Fabritius will feature in this lecture. Also featured will be the early pictures of Vermeer, some of which might be a surprise with their vast difference from the work usually associated with Vermeer.
Lecture Two – Sabry's Vermeers:
Our second session in the course will feature a selection of masterpieces from the most famous period of the artist's career. Together we will review favorites like "The Girl with a Pearl Earring" and "The Milkmaid." Also featured will be lesser-known and controversial works, as well as his late great masterpiece "The Art of Painting".
Lecture Three – Vermeer retrospective, hosted by Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum in 2023
In which we will immerse ourselves in the less popular but nevertheless extremely interesting Vermeers, featuring the latest research, debates, and a sneak peek of the Vermeer exhibition of 2023 in Amsterdam. We will also discuss how Vermeer went in and out of fashion, only to be rediscovered in the 19th century.

I was extremely impressed by how Sabry organized this well-researched talk! I just wish that I could have listened live and put some comments/questions in the chat instead of having to listen to the recordings..
