Join Viv as she heads (virtually) out of London to visit some of her favorite stately homes. This is a fitting seminar for anyone with a keen interest in architecture, British traditions, and snooping inside impressive family collections.

Evelyn Waugh, the author of ‘Brideshead Revisited’, described the Stately Homes of England as its ‘chief national artistic achievement’. This conversation will put this quote to the test as we travel with Viv from Hever Castle in the south of the country to Harewood House in the north. Along the route, we’ll discuss the rich variety of architectural styles from the Tudor to the Baroque to the Palladian, and the Neo-Classical and the high Victorian.

Almost without exception, these stately houses are in gorgeous settings. We will hear about the builders of the houses, and the collections they hold. Beneficiaries of the tradition of the Grand Tour, the likes of Hatfield and Syon, and Waddesdon are resplendent with extraordinary collections of art. In each house, Viv will tell us what she would take if she ‘could just have one thing’ - it might be a piece of porcelain, an element of the architecture, or the view from an upstairs window.

In many cases, the homes are still lived in by the families that built them. Viv will introduce participants to an array of Dukes, Marquises, and Earls that call these architectural gems home and tell us about the source of the wealth that built them.

Led by an expert on the stately homes of England, Viv Haxby, this interactive seminar will give you an insight into this unique aspect of England’s heritage. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased awareness of England’s grand houses and the families that built them.

Viv has a degree in English Language and Medieval Literature from Durham University. She spends part of each year in France, but for the past 25 years London has been home. She enjoys sharing her enthusiasm for London's C18 and C19 history and her detailed knowledge of the city's royal connections. She has a particular interest in the great aristocratic landholdings of London, and has created walks around the 'villages' of London such as Chelsea, Bloomsbury and Spitalfields. Viv also works as a volunteer marshal, or 'Green Gown' at Westminster Abbey.

Informative and fun

I really enjoy the way Vivienne presents the material. She clearly enjoys her topic and is informative and fun. I madly scribble notes to myself about where and what I want to see in person when we are released to travel again. Thank you.

Anecdote to Pandemic while awaiting Vaccine

The details of the different homes histories, architecture and furnishing where fascinating. The intro led me to think there would be a visit to Waddeston, because I had read it referenced to Highclere's Lady Almina. Perhaps another time?

We all benefited from Vivienne’s passion and in-depth knowledge of the Stately Homes of England. I like how we
cover so many of these homes in such a short period of time because of this webinar format.
