The Netflix mega-hit The Crown traces the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II from her youth through her coronation to her mature years as monarch. This seminar will investigate the palaces, castles, cathedrals, and other locations that form the sumptuous backdrop to her royal life and the real-life sites used to film world-renowned series.

Peter Morgan's Netflix drama, The Crown, chronicles Queen Elizabeth II’s life from her marriage to Prince Philip of Greece in 1947, her accession to the throne in 1952 to modern times, with the fourth series introducing the young Lady Diana Spencer. The superb production values are well served by glorious locations that provide the necessary lavish interiors in which the drama takes place. A significant proportion was shot in British castles, cathedrals, stately homes, and manor houses across the UK and abroad.

In this seminar, we will discuss the locations used to film The Crown, most of which are open to the public. We will visit Wilton House in Wiltshire, The Royal Naval College at Greenwich, and Lancaster House in London, which all stand-in for Buckingham Palace. Westminster Abbey, where the coronation took place, is replaced by Ely Cathedral in Cambridgeshire and the beautiful and appropriately named "Elizabeth Saloon" at Belvoir Castle for interiors at Windsor. Other locations include Harrow School, Burghley House, and Goldsmiths Hall in the City of London. We will discuss each location’s historical and royal context, both real and replacement, and marvel at the continuity required in filming at the vast number of locations.

Led by an expert on historic interiors, Hattie Bennett, this interactive seminar will focus on the locations used in The Crown. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the many buildings used in the production and their historical importance.

Hattie has a degree in History of Art and an MA in Historic Interiors, she has a life-long passion and fascination in Fine and Decorative Arts, particularly works produced in Europe from the 16th to 18th century. After working for the Royal Collection in the Print Room at Windsor Castle, she was a curator for a private collector of 17th and 18th century prints and drawings. Hattie has worked for London's foremost framer of important old master paintings during which time she sharpened her appreciation and understanding of the decorative arts and the changing tastes of collecting. Recently she has been dealing in prints and works of art as well as taking groups of all ages to museums and galleries.

Behind the Scenes

A most informative look into the locations used and the lavish budget for this series. It is also interesting to learn how through the magic of technology scenes were made historically accurate. I also enjoyed hearing the British perspective on this series which Americans find fascinating.
