Portugal is home to an incredibly rich heritage of street art. We will step with Pascal into the unexpected history of its cobblestones and decorative tiles. It is a story with its own twists and turns, including such things as Portugal's rain-drenched climate, seasick pedestrians, and ships set sail to Portuguese colonies.

In this conversation, we will use the displays of permanent street art, such as tiles and cobbles to understand more about Portugal's history. Our conversation will discuss the uses and origins of these appealing art pieces. We'll talk about various worldly influences on tiles: from the Islamic Golden Age, 17th-century Dutch expansion, or Chinese art. We'll use examples of tiles and cobblestones in Lisbon but will look further afield to previous Portuguese colonies to see the influence of these art pieces, such as Brazil and its renowned Copacabana stretch. This displays a teeming and fluid expression of modernism in public life and is something that will be discussed.

Led by local Lisbon expert Pascal Ansell, this interactive discussion will discuss Portugal's history through an interesting approach: street art. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a better understanding of the significance of Portuguese tiles and much more.

Born in Oxford to an Anglo-Belgian family, Pascal graduated with a first-class B.A. honors in English & Music after studying in Leeds and Berlin. He approaches the city with the senses, absorbing the magic of the everyday. Pascal's collaborations with local musicians have helped build him a colorful (and loud!) picture of a city, one which resonates with a passion for the moment. As a local concert promoter, English teacher as well as Pilates instructor, Pascal has a broad insight into everyday working Lisbon and can sing the praises of the seemingly ordinary aspects of Portugal, revealing the hidden histories behind everyday life.

Pascal did a wonderful job. I have improvement suggestions for moderator Ben. He looks and sounds bored. I’m sure he can learn to be more of an ambassador. Also, start recordings at the moment of opening the waiting room, not before. I’ve seen one speaker at her worst while trying to connect, or 15 minutes of Ben looking bored. He will improve, I feel sure.
