The iconic Athenian Acropolis impresses both the first time and returning visitor, but its current remains are merely a shadow of its ancient splendor. This seminar will explore the stories and monuments on this fascinating site.

The Athenian Acropolis towers over the modern city, a constant reminder of the ancient past. The Parthenon is its most well-known monument, but for the ancient visitor this hill was also the place for local myths and a range of different cults. Join this seminar to learn about the buildings, the statues, and the rituals taking place on this fascinating site.

Already, the entrance to the Acropolis attracted admiration in the ancient sources, and upon entering, the visitor would have met a forest of statues, stelae, columns, and temples. What was depicted here was both the mythical and real history of the Athenians spanning centuries, from the time of overthrowing of tyranny to honoring Augustus and the Roman empire 500 years later. Numerous rituals were also performed on the hill - including a peculiar one where after an ox was slain by an altar, the axe that killed it was put on trial and condemned as the murderer.

Led by an expert on Greek religion and archaeology, Dr. Helena Meskanen, this interactive seminar will examine this fascinating archaeological site and the stories and buildings once on it. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of life and religion in ancient Athens.

Wonderful detail on an often overlooked area

This was a fantastic look at the buildings of the Acropolis that, generally, are both literally and figuratively overshadowed by the Parthenon. A meticulous presentation and very, very interesting!
