Jews first arrived in Copenhagen in 1622 thanks to King Christian IV, and continue to be an integral part of life in Copenhagen today. This conversation explores the history of Jewish Copenhagen; the triumphs, sorrows, and legacies of those who have long called Copenhagen home.
We will discuss the arrival of the first Jews in Denmark in the 17th century, by invitation of the Danish King. We’ll explore the early years of Jews in Copenhagen and learn about important locations throughout the city, such as the Great Synagogue of Copenhagen. We’ll move into a discussion of World War Two as we learn about the rescue of Danish Jews by brave fishermen who helped to save more than 95% of the Danish Jewish population to safety in Sweden. A total of some 7,000 Danish Jews were a part of this miraculous rescue in 1943. Our conversation will also discuss Jewish life in Copenhagen today, the issue of antisemitism, and the terror attack on a synagogue in 2015. We will also discuss how the influence of certain personalities and this history continues to impact the Jewish community of Copenhagen today.
Led by local Jewish authority, Charlotte Thalmay, this interactive seminar will deepen participants’ understanding of Jewish Copenhagen, its history, its struggles, and insight into what it was and what it is to be Jewish in Denmark.

Charlotte Thalmay specializes in Jewish tours in Copenhagen, telling the dramatic and inspiring story of the Danish Jews. Whilst guiding, she shares her personal family stories about survival, prosperity, and catastrophes. She has a Bachelor degree in tourism from Roskilde University and is vice president of the Zionist federation in Denmark.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.

Jewish Copenhagen

This was a very moving seminar. Not only did we get a sense of history and place about the Jewish community during the Years of WWII, we also got an inspiring story about Charlotte's own family. I was very moved by this session.

Charlotte's lecture was at times emotional and moving, and always educational. She is a talented speaker, which when combined with total knowledge of a subject truly near and dear to her heart, made for a riveting class. I only wish there had been more people in the audience to enjoy Charlotte's work.
