The Dolomites are the “Rock Cathedrals” of the Italian Alps; they enclose a geographical area of stunning beauty and they also are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This seminar offers a general overview of the region and will provide useful tips for planning a day trip or a short stay.

The Dolomites are the most famous region of the Italian Alps. We will learn a little bit of geology, some historical facts, local legends, and share plenty of pictures to show the variety of beautiful landscapes in the region.

First, we will familiarize ourselves with the location and geography of the area and understand how to reach the Dolomites from major Italian cities. Since these mountains are known for their amazing colors, we will also discuss their geological formation. Next, we will dive into the history of the various populations who have lived in the area and their legends and local folklore. We will explore the local customs and also the main cultural attractions including museums and other sites.

The Dolomites are one of the “Italian Capital of Outdoor Activities”, so we will discuss sports – both summer and winter.  We will provide general tips on skiing, hiking and much more. We will finish with insider tips and suggestions on where to stay, what to eat, how to avoid the crowds.

Led by a licensed tour guide born and raised in the Region of Veneto, Matteo Gabbrielli, this interactive seminar will provide a general introduction to the area of the Dolomites. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased desire to set out on a trip to discover these fascinating mountains.

Originally from Venetian mainland, Matteo has lived in different countries, which sparked his interest in art history and archaeology. He holds a B.A. in Cultural Heritage Preservation and an M.A. in Archaeology from the University Ca' Foscari, Venezia. He specialized in Islamic Archaeology with a thesis on Medieval Egyptian ceramics, focusing on the sherds found at the Italian & Egyptian Center for Restoration and Archaeology (CIERA) in Cairo. Matteo chose to specialize in Islamic Archaeology, due to his personal passion and curiosity for the Islamic World: this particular interest was developed after several travels and stays in different Middle Eastern countries. He works as a freelance archaeologist following projects in different locations of the Veneto and also teaches history courses in local schools. In addition, he continues a close collaboration with the CIERA where he is involved in leading archaeological excavations.

A beginning exploration of the Dolomites...

I have been to Bolzano and this presentation put it in even better perspective than I realized than when I was there. It was a very good summary of an area I will look forward to returning to again.

Inspiring Overview of Dolomites

This was a terrific session. Mr Gabbrielli was an articulate and entertaining presenter, kept a crisp pace going over quite a bit of material but never rushing. As a result I have pushed a visit to this area way up my travel list!

I can't imagine a better overview of the Dolomites. It was all there- from the basic geography, to the culture, and finally, great travel tips. Matteo's presentation was super well organized and well supported with maps and great slides. I feel like he set the "context" for my next trip to the Dolomites. Bravo, Matteo!!
