Lima is much more than an obligatory stop on the way to Machu Picchu. Learn more about what Lima has to offer, from colonial architecture and (Pre-) Incan temples to the best food in the world through this introductory seminar.

For too long the capital of Peru has been underestimated as an attractive destination for foreign visitors. This seminar introduces you to the historical and contemporary City of Kings and its wide range of attractions. We will cover the highlights, including the colorful and elegant colonial buildings of Lima’s historical center, the impressive cliffs of the Malecón, and a Pre-Incan ceremonial site but also hidden gems such as the bohemian neighborhood or a historical area revived by contemporary street art.

But Lima’s assets are not limited to buildings or historical heritage. Its food and its people might even outshine these. In recent years, Lima has become a foodie destination. Find out some ways to experience Lima’s gastronomy beyond just eating at fancy restaurants. We’ll learn how Lima’s food is as diverse as its inhabitants: a mix of Andean, Amazonian and coastal cultures. Experiencing this diversity, its local culture, and hospitality is an essential part of an authentic visit to Lima and is one we will showcase in this Context Conversation.

Led by an expert on Peruvian history and culture, Alfredo Bendezu, this interactive seminar will introduce participants to Peru’s capital Lima and what it has to offer to visitors. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the City of Kings.

Born and raised in Lima, Alfredo is a passionate traveler and avid learner, who firmly believes in the transformative power of responsible tourism to strengthen the economies and dignity of the most vulnerable peoples of Peru. Alfredo graduated in Communications from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, but his curiosity has taken him abroad to different Asian countries, where he has worked as an advertiser, journalist, and even became an expert in Chinese Cuisine at the Sichuan Tourism University, in the city of Chengdu. After finishing his studies in China, he returned to Peru in 2015 and founded Social Andean Expedition, an initiative that promotes quality education for schools in remote and vulnerable indigenous communities, providing them with access to solar power through experiential and sustainable tourism programs. Alfredo is also a partner and expert guide at Alternative Peru, an educational and sustainable tourism company based in Lima.

Introduction to Lima

Alfredo expertly combined the history of Lima with sights in the city and also included some sights on the outskirts of the city that could be done in a day trip. He also included information about Peruvian food and it origins. His talk ended a bit early but he had extra slides and videos which was able to share at the end.

Expanding my concept of Lima

A wonderful presentation of the historical and cultural context of Lima as a district and city. I had visited Lima and seen much of what was shown in this presentation but feel that I would have enjoyed Alfredo’s expertise to enhance what I discovered on my own. I will definitely look him up if I am privileged enough to return to this amazing place.
