In Switzerland and England, the 16th-century German artist Hans Holbein the Younger created portraits for many patrons, including scholars, politicians, and courtiers. Holbein’s drawings and paintings, enriched by inscriptions and evocative objects, offer richly detailed visual statements of personal identity.
When Holbein emerged on the competitive European artistic scene in 1515, portraiture had only recently become fashionable among wealthy patrons outside royal and aristocratic circles. A versatile artist with exceptional skills as a draftsman and painter, Holbein rendered the physical appearance of various sitters with great precision. At the same time, his ingenious compositions conveyed their values and ideals.
Led by an expert Art Historian, we journey through the impressive collection left behind by this masterful portrait artist. Designed to inspire curiosity as well as future travels, participants will learn about the art of portraiture in Renaissance-era Europe.
