Villa Adriana, one of the largest residences of the ancient world (it covers an area larger than Pompeii), is a magnificent estate that brings together the highest expressions of the material cultures of the ancient Mediterranean world. The estate, an outstanding architectural legacy of Emperor Hadrian, was built during his reign (117 to 138 AD) and was designed as an ideal city that incorporated the architectural traditions of Ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt. Join us as we stroll back in time to examine this remarkable UNESCO World Heritage site and contextualize the moments in history it has witnessed.

Hadrian, an amateur architect, played an active role in designing lavish pavilions, palaces, theatres, sprawling gardens, pools, and fountains for his magnificent residence. We will discuss Hadrian’s legacy as an emperor, from his military career to his art collection. More than five hundred pieces of sculpture have been unearthed there over the centuries, and the variety of architectural features of the Villa have inspired countless writers and artists, one for all the Belgian writer Marguerite Yourcenar, in her masterpiece “Memoirs of Hadrian.”

Together we will virtually stroll through Hadrian’s Villa beginning from the s.c. Maritime Theater–the most private part of the estate. From there, our expert will lead us to the iconic Canopus complex: with its large rectangular pool surrounded by beautiful sculptures, the numerous baths, and the recently rediscovered, Antinoeion (the sacred area that scholars believe once housed the tomb of Hadrian’s young favorite, the beautiful Antinous.)

Led by an expert on Ancient Roman Topography, Livia Galante, this Conversation will focus on Hadrian’s Villa and its owner, Emperor Hadrian. Designed to inspire curiosity and future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the role played by Emperor Hadrian in the development of this ancient Roman destination.

Excellent Review of the Site

Livia Galante's review of this important Villa was truly excellent. She has a collection of personal photographs that are just outstanding. She has expertly combined these photos with simulations or renderings of the buildings and really brings the conversation to life. I don't think you could get this good of an idea of the overall development of this Villa and surrounding properties just by walking around the remaining ruins in person with a tour guide. The digital assets really supported the conversation extremely well. I am so glad that I attended this lecture!
