Join historian, Dr. Spencer Wells, to examine the beginning and bitter effects of the Great Depression in American culture, politics, and society. This interactive seminar will explore the causes and impacts of this momentous period of American history.

Catastrophe hit on October 29, 1929. Despite booming economic projections only a year before, the stock market plummeted beyond anyone's expectation. By the end of October over 16 million dollars had been lost; over ten percent of all banks would declare bankruptcy in the next year; unemployment would soon bottom out at close to twenty-five percent. And this was only the beginning.

Together we will take an expansive look at the beginnings of the Great Depression in America, not only examining the effects of stock prices on Black Tuesday, but also how regular Americans sought to grapple with economic circumstances which refused to cooperate, and how the Great Depression transformed them and the country in the process. In so doing we will look at how the Great Depression changed American religion, food culture, politics, and more.

Led by an expert on American history, politics, and religion, Dr. Spencer Wells, this interactive seminar will explore the origins and lasting legacy of the Great Depression. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of how the United States was forever changed by the events of 1929.
