Meet the early explorers of the Maya area who were the inspiration for the fictional Indiana Jones character. Travel back in time and explore the jungle in search of Maya ruins as they did!

Who has not dreamed of exploring strange lands in search of lost cities and undiscovered artifacts? Since ancient times, man has hungered for adventure and knowledge. After their early encounters with the American continent, many men and women risked traveling to unknown lands. Some were on a quest for fame and fortune, others were inspired by the thrill of the chase. Others still were driven by the ancestral knowledge they hoped to find. Before archaeology was considered an official career, men, and women of different professions explored Maya lands in search of the unknown. From their exploits, achievements, and failures the fictional character Indiana Jones was created. But, who were these real men who we sometimes refer to as heroes and other times call the villains of history?

Led by an expert on archeology and Maya culture, Jazmín Caraveo Tuñón, this seminar will introduce us to the experiences of some of the first explorers of the jungle and their achievements that formed the basis of Maya studies. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the risk-taking adventurers whose impressive work has brought the Maya world closer to us.

Born and raised in Mexico City, Jazmín’s interest and passion for pre-Colonial art and worldview of ancient Mexican cultures led her to pursue a degree in archaeology (ENAH) and a Master’s degree in Mesoamerican studies (UNAM). Her fascination for the Maya culture and her love for Mexico led her to become an adventurous tour guide with the purpose of sharing the historic, cultural, and natural heritage of this beautiful country.
