Our presenter's knowledge is encyclopedic - she is a wonderful scholar and a great presenter. Her strategies for helping us focus on the most important portions of the slides were much appreciated and her interactions with attendees were fun and informative! I've walked with Context since they were Scale Reale and she is a standout! The reading list was excellent - I was able to gain additional information and cement my learning from the seminars. My only wish is that the list could be provided when one enrolls so there is time to prepare - I ordered and read from cover to cover three of the recommended books. .
Livia related a wonderful and fascinating discussion about the social classes before 494BC in Rome. I learned about the classes (patricians, plebians, freedmen, slaves) and the "man's world" of this Roman era (i.e., how women held very little power), The types of marriages were interesting (and divorce was permissible but subsequent outcome was detrimental to women). The family development was included which was enlightening -- how children were sometimes treated (albeit badly) how they were raised and educated, and played -- with differences among the classes. How life was for a Vestal Virgin was presented also (privileges, forbidden actions, duties, advantages for women) along with the unfortunate life for slaves. A well-rounded presentation!
Full of interesting details with many examples of daily life some compared to modern life which heightens your engagement and understanding of practices in ancient roman life.
It was great! Livia was very informative and knowledgable and clear,
This session was a fun romp exploring the interesting and less known aspects of the production, types of foods/drink, how meals were prepared, served and eaten including "street food" via grills, plus Roman manners at upper class banquets (and guests were even given a doggy bag [apophoreta]-- who knew), Learned about such Roman delicacies (ugh) of dormouse, flamingo tongue, peacock brains, special sauces, Yes, a lot of wine ingested even if watered down (and she described the remedies for drunkenness). All so fascinating to me! Loved this session.
