Join a historian as we go on a cultural journey assessing the development of culture in Cuba from its colonial past to the present. From European influences to Cuban music, to the impact of the Cuban Revolution, we’ll assess the role of various players in the shaping of Cuban culture.

We’ll begin by exploring in some detail the cultural contributions of some specific figures between the eighteenth and the end of the twentieth century. We’ll also focus on aspects of culture such as religious diversity, the tensions between European cultural influences (mostly French), the proximity of American culture, and the rise of the Latin American literary boom in the second half of the twentieth century. Architecture, paintings, and other art forms provide a context for the exploration of Cuban music and its impact on musical traditions throughout the world. The final sections of our seminar will examine in some detail the impact of the Cuban Revolution on the production of culture and its availability to the population at large.

Led by Cuban-born historian Dr. Teofilo Ruiz this conversation will awaken our understanding of the cultural roots and history in Cuba. Designed to inform curiosity and future travels, participants will emerge with a deeper knowledge of the development of Cuban culture from its colonial rule until its revolutionary days.

Teo F. Ruiz, PhD is a Cuban-American medieval historian and a Distinguished Research Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Barack Obama. He is the author of 15 books.

Enjoyable mix of the culture of Cuba-literature, film and music. Makes me want to explore the island, art-scene and people more.

Excellent! Most of the information was not new to me because I am Cuban. But I enjoy tremendously the way he puts all this together. And I learned from the connections among people, works of art and so on. His connections between French and Cuban cultures "lighted a bulb" for me: Sometimes one lives things but does not make these connections. Dr. Ruiz has done that for me in this and other conversations. Thanks, Teofilo!
