Description

Join Alan Montgomery to gain an insider's view of the workings of an international auction house. What actually goes on behind the scenes? Who is buying and who is selling? Who values the art? Why do some works of art make much more than others? And what about fakes and forgeries?
Sometimes described as relying on ‘smoke and mirrors’ to create a sense of mystique and glamour, the art world often attracts headlines in the international press, particularly when high-profile works of art sell for vast amounts of money. Having worked for many years as a senior specialist in Contemporary Art at one of the world’s largest auction houses, Alan Montgomery will reveal the inside story of daily life at such a company, discussing the history and workings of the multi-billion dollar trade in art and relating some of his own experiences, both good and bad. He will also give tips for collectors looking to dip a toe into the sometimes confusing process of buying and selling at auction.
Led by an ex-auctioneer and expert in art history, Alan Montgomery, this interactive seminar will focus on the world of art and antique auctions and give an insider’s view of how the auction world functions. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels (or art purchases!), participants will come away with an increased understanding of the often mysterious world of fine art auctions.

Behind the headlines at the auction house

Dr. Montgomery's expertise as a former employee at an auction house really pays off in this seminar. He is (as usual) well-organized and engaging as he leads us through the history and current state of auction houses. I've read about a few auctions since this seminar, and I'm pleased to have a better understanding of the process, lingo, and pricing. I'm also likely to venture into an auction house when I see one, now that I know it's perfectly public viewing ahead of the event. Highly recommended seminar.

An insider's take the world of fine art auctions

Dr. Montgomery gives a fascinating seminar on the world of auction houses based upon his years working in the business. I knew very little about how auction houses operated and how they fit into the larger world of fine art. Dr. Montgomery provided an insider's view of how the business work. It was very engaging talk. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Absolutely fun!

As usual Dr Montgomery "delivers the goods." This seminar was informative and interesting of course but it was also practical, nitty gritty, gossipy fun. Realizing I have used some descriptive words here that Americans would not find offensive
....I do apologize if other cultures might. We in the Colonies do love people giving us "the real scoop" and in a conservative but fun way that is what is what I experienced.....and it was delightful. I am now very ready to begin broadening my cultural experience in NYC by visiting Sotheby's and Christie's show room presentations before they are put up for auction! Very exciting.
