In partnership with Story Terrace, we present Great American Families with Dr. Jeremi Suri. Like Story Terrace, we believe in creating connections to the past through the study of history and heritage and the telling of great, often lesser-known, stories.

In this series, Dr. Suri will connect us with the fascinating lives of arguably the most famous, and sometimes infamous, American families. From the oil, religion, and politics of the Rockefellers to the mining, judaism, and art of the Guggenheims to the bootlegging, Irish-American politics, and presidency of the Kennedys - join us as we develop a deeper understanding of the journeys of these families. And reflect on how your own families may have navigated these unique moments in history.

In this conversation, we will examine the Kennedys – who combined glamour, wealth, and power like no other family in American History. They began as Irish immigrants and bootleggers, but over time moved their money into more legitimate enterprises, including Hollywood movies. Instead of philanthropy, the family invested in politics. Joseph Kennedy bought his way into an ambassadorship, with disastrous consequences before the Second World War. He used his wealth to groom his sons for politics and to promote the mystique of his family. When John F. Kennedy became president the family had reached higher than almost any other, but their rapid and tragic fall left a lingering image of possibility and lost youth for a more cynical country.

The Kennedy dynasty

My first time with Dr. Jeremi Suri. He is excellent. I am a big Kennedy family fan and thought I knew it all, but I didn't. Loved how he connected Joe being Ambassador to England with the Irish history and why so important.
