From the Volta's electric battery to the Vespa motorscooter, from pizza to blue jeans, this seminar will look at how creativity, necessity, and sometimes pure chance have inspired some great Italian inventions. We will discuss the impact of these innovative designs around the world as we admire Italian ingenuity.

Many products which are part of our day to day lives can be attributed to Italian scholars, scientists, and artisans. We will focus on a few such as the telephone, the espresso machine, and of course, the pizza. We will learn that we measure electricity in ‘Volts’ thanks to inventor Alessandro Volta, the man behind the battery, born in Como, Italy. By connecting ideas and places, we’ll understand how Italy has contributed to innovation and design.

Led by an expert on Italian culture, Laura Benitti, this interactive seminar will explore famous Italian inventors and the geniuses behind them. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an understanding of the backstory to many famous inventions.

Laura was born in Turin, where she studied history of art, but moved to Milan in 2002. Since her graduation, she has accumulated a long experience as an art consultant and registrar in a few museums in Turin, as well as expertise as a local Milan guide. She loves to be both an experienced and friendly local ambassador of Milan and Como area for her travelers.

Good talk, interesting topic

This presenter always presents her material with enthusiasm and depth of knowledge, and she often picks unusual angles that reveal much about things I thought I knew. This talks is another fine example.

An Enlightening Presentation on Key Italian Inventors: Good to Know!

This was a fascinating discussion of 9 important, but usually not well known, innovations brought to the world by geniuses from Italy. From pizza Margherita (knew that one already) to communication apparati (radio transmitter, telephone) to the ice cream cone and a common coffee maker, through to the Vespa (of course), Laura held my interest well with her facts, photos, historical discussion, and amusing stories surrounding some of the innovations. Bottom line: I learned a lot of new information to further explore!
