A national leader or an illegal president, sovereign democracy or dictatorship, a strong man or a coward, a superpower or a dying empire? Let’s look at the last twenty years of Russian history with a historian from Moscow as we try to understand the current situation and hypothesize the future path of Russia's government.
In August 1999, Vladimir Putin became Prime Minister of the Russian Federation. At this point in time, the country was recovering from the economic crisis of 1998, and its future was not looking great. We’ll discuss how Mr. Putin entered the political stage, from holding office as vice mayor of the second-largest city of the country to a Prime Minister who was not very well known by an average citizen. In 2000 he became President, and one of the most controversial periods of Russian history began.
Together we will look at the biography of the current president of Russia, trying to find the turning points of his life and the origins of his remarkable style in decision making. We will try to find the reasons for his great popularity in the country and for his achievements and victories that are difficult to deny. We will talk about the prominent opposition leaders, their views, and their programs. We will highlight the historical periods of Putin’s presidency and look at his rule from a historical perspective as we attempt to put our emotions aside.
Led by historian Vadim Malinovsky, this webinar will give a deep dive into the twenty-first-century history of Russia. Participants will come away with an increased understanding of the current political situation in the country.
This webinar presents a critical analysis of contemporary Russian political policy. Respectful dialogue is paramount. A few prompts to consider in advance:
