When Henry VIII came to the throne in 1509, England was a Catholic country, with the king himself mounting a spirited defense of the church and papacy following the tion of Martin Luther’s 95 Theses. In the late 1520s, however, as the king sought, and failed, to obtain a papal annulment to his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, he set the English Reformation in motion.
 Our conversation will also follow the timeline of the Reformation into the reign of Henry’s son, Edward VI, which saw a full-blown Protestant Reformation, before the return to Catholicism of his half-sister, Mary’s, reign. Finally, we will end by examining the Elizabethan settlement of 1559, which created the Protestant Church of England. 
Led by Dr. Elizabeth Norton, a British historian and expert on the Tudor period, this conversation will examine in close detail the changes to the church wrought by Henry VIII, examining whether it can be said to be something that was imposed on the people from the royal court or which enjoyed popular support. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the religious changes that were so central to the history of the Tudor dynasty.

Dr Elizabeth Norton is a British historian, specialising in the Tudor period. She has degrees from both Oxford and Cambridge universities and King's College London. She is the author of twelve books, including 'The Hidden Lives of Tudor Women', 'The Temptation of Elizabeth Tudor' and biographies of four of Henry VIII's wives. She regularly appears as an expert on television.

Dr. Norton provided a thorough look at this key moment in the history of England. With her wit and charm she told a story that had great significance to the English speaking world. Taking a complicated subject and a short period of time, she crammed in incredibly vivid details. Tudor Tuesdays and Dr. Norton are Contexts best contribution to a world changed by COVID.
