Impressive mountains, whisky distilleries, islands, Neolithic stone circles, ruined medieval abbeys, haunted castles. Scotland has it all. From the north to the very south, these 10 destinations combine thrilling history with scenic routes and must-do experiences.
We will start our journey from the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh, and its imposing castle. Carrying on through Stirling, with the National Wallace Monument that reminds us of the medieval fights between England and Scotland, we’ll reach the vibrant and modern West End of Glasgow.
As we move north into the Highlands, we’ll see how volcanic explosions and the passage of glaciers formed some of the most impressive glens, like the iconic Glen Coe. The secluded beach of Durness, on the North Coast 500, will lead to the impressive Smoo Cave, a natural sea cave set into cliffs.
The standing stones and stone circles in the Kilmartin Glen, one of the most important archaeological sites in Scotland, will take us back to the Neolithic time. Descending Argyll’s secret coast, we’ll reach the isle of Arran, often described as Scotland in miniature. Here, in King's Cave, is where Robert the Bruce is said to have had his famous encounter with a spider.
The Trossachs National Park, which inspired artists and poets, offers beautiful walks, outdoor activities, cruises, and the chance to hike the most southerly Munro. The Abbey’s Cycle Route will take us across the rolling hills of the Borders and into Scotland’s religious past. Needless to say, our journey will not be complete without a dram of whisky! We’ll discover the Speyside and its concentration of distilleries, with the Cairngorms National Park as a backdrop.
