While often overlooked, the Central Region of Portugal lies between the Douro River on north side, the Tejo River on south side, the Atlantic Coastline on West side and the border with Spain (Extremadura and Castilla) on East Side. Its geographic position allows it to have a very contrasting landscapes and rich urban sites and monuments. From densely packed coastal cities, to sparsely populated mountain towns, Portugal's Central Region is home to beautiful landscapes – full of rich cultural traditions, architecture, cuisines, and more for us to explore together. 

Join Context in this virtual visit through some of Central Portugal's most unique locations, highlighting its distinct architectural style, including UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Historical Center of Coimbra and its famous University, the Gothic Monasteries of Batalha, Alcobaça, the Templar’s headquarter of Convent of Christ in Tomar, and the huge Royal Palaces of Mafra and Sintra. As we travel through this region's lands and locations, coastal cities and medieval country towns, viewers will learn about Central Portugal's unique historical narratives and cultural traditions, allowing viewers to learn tips and tricks from locals for modern-day travels. Leaving the cities, Tiago will expose viewers to Central Portugal's idyllic nature, the Serra da Estrela and Sintra-Cascais parks and wide open beaches, dotted with both cosmopolitan cities and quaint traditional towns.

Travel through these landmarks to learn more about the moments in history they've witnessed – from the Ancient Roman Empire, Arab-Islamic presence, the "border area" era during its expansion against the Muslims and Spain, and its role in the Age of Exploration and the Baroque Period. Led by an expert on Architecture and Art History, Tiago Miranda Neiva, this interactive seminar will explore the highlights of Portugal's central region. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a better knowledge of Portuguese history, geography and culture. 
About Your Expert

Tiago Miranda Neiva was born and raised in Lisbon. He studied architecture in Rome and worked later in distinct offices in Portugal and Spain. For several years he was Professor of Arts and Art History, having a Master's degree in Teaching of Visual Arts. He is currently working towards a PhD focused on the Art and Architecture of al-Andalus: the confluence between the Arab, Jewish and Christian medieval world. In recent years he has been working as a tour guide in his hometown, seeking to show and reveal its most intimate secrets through an authentic and passionate local vision.
