The City of London is the oldest part of London and was founded by the Romans around 2000 years ago. With such a long history it is no surprise that there is much to discover down the little alleyways and many secret gardens in the City. It is always best to explore this area with a guide because often only small clues remain which point to much bigger stories from London’s history.

On this tour, we will start at the spectacular St Paul’s Cathedral, designed by Sir Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of London of 1666, and then wind our way through the streets and alleyways of the City to discover some of its secrets. We will see where people got their news in the Middle Ages, a church disguised as a garden, and a hidden memorial to normal people who died while saving others. We’ll find remnants of Roman London, rare medieval survivals, picturesque alleyways, and beautiful churches. And on the way, we’ll find out loads about London.

Led by Art Historian and Blue Badge Guide Sarah Ciacci, this virtual tour will give you a taster of the fascinating hidden corners of the City of London which is full of history. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an understanding of the history of London and an introduction to the complex and multi-layered City of London.

This virtual tour is part of an extended series in London, led by Sarah Ciacci. Each virtual tour can be joined independently and in any order. For more information, please click here.
