Until the 20th century, the production of art was firmly the domain of men. Women were believed not to possess the "Genius" required to make important art although they could inspire greatness in art produced by men. A small group of women did excel and it is these painters who will be the focus of this talk.
Amongst them is Sofonisba Anguissola, admired by Michelangelo and Van Dyck, who became court painter to the mighty connoisseur Philip II in Spain. Clara Peeters, whose quiet still life paintings created a new genre in Dutch art. Artemisia Genteleschi who produced some of the most memorable images in Baroque Rome and Elizabeth Vigee LeBrun, who desperately attempted to improve the image of her patron, Marie Antoinette of France.
We will discuss why women artists have been neglected and how modern curatorship is attempting to right this wrong with important acquisitions and exhibitions. At last, these women are getting the recognition they deserve and we look forward to introducing some dynamic, innovative painters who not only reflected the work of their brother artists but push boundaries and expectations.
Led by art historian Hattie Bennett, this interactive seminar will unpick the narrative of female artists with the aid of key paintings. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a true understanding of this lesser-spoken about topic.

Hattie has a degree in History of Art and an MA in Historic Interiors, she has a life-long passion and fascination in Fine and Decorative Arts, particularly works produced in Europe from the 16th to 18th century. After working for the Royal Collection in the Print Room at Windsor Castle, she was a curator for a private collector of 17th and 18th century prints and drawings. Hattie has worked for London's foremost framer of important old master paintings during which time she sharpened her appreciation and understanding of the decorative arts and the changing tastes of collecting. Recently she has been dealing in prints and works of art as well as taking groups of all ages to museums and galleries.
