The Italian Coastline surrounding Pompeii was at one point the equivalent of New York’s Hamptons. Wealthy Romans from the capital returned there for the season to wine, dine, and enjoy one of the world's most beautiful coastlines. Their homes boasted elaborate frescoes, heating and cooling systems, and infinity pools with spectacular views.
Led by an expert on art and architecture in Southern Italy, Danielle Oteri will take guests on a virtual tour of the most lavish Roman villas on the Vesuvius Coast during the 1st century C.E. Designed to immerse participants in the culture of Campania beyond the borders of Pompeii, we will come away knowing about food, wine, and art of ancient Southern Italy.
Ms. Oteri will introduce us to the known villas that were certainly among the hundreds that remain un-excavated. This conversation visits Tiberius's mountaintop villa at Capri, the underwater mosaics at Baia, the luxury villa discovered underneath a church on the Amalfi Coast, and the country estates at Boscoreale –– and more!

Danielle Oteri is an expert on Roman, medieval and Renaissance art. She was a Lecturer at the Met Cloisters for fifteen years and has been Program Director of the International Center of Medieval Art since 2008. Danielle has written about art, history, food and travel for Conde Nast Traveler, Gothamist, NPR and Roads & Kingdoms. She is the founder of Feast on History and Arthur Avenue Food Tours.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.

Interesting insight into Roman villas from the height of the Roman Empire

Well considered & pictorially illustrated view of several key villas from the Vesuvius region from Roman times. Danielle used recent photographs of ruins & underwater images to discuss life of the wealthy elite of the Roman Empire. Brought a great deal of understanding of how people - elite & the masses lived. Really enjoyed this presentation. Thanks Danielle!
