Join architectural historian Luca Orlandi for a provocative re-reading of the architectural masterpieces designed by architect Sinan in the Ottoman Empire of the 16th century.  We will gain insight into the cultural exchange between East and West through the many works created by the great Ottoman architect in Istanbul and around the region.
In this seminar, we will investigate some of the masterpieces designed by Sinan throughout his career and discuss how his works can be defined as the greatest achievements of the 16th century Classical Ottoman architecture and also how his work created a strong cultural bridge with Western Renaissance architects and artists of his time.
Appointed by Sultan Suleiman as Chief of the Imperial Architects in 1538, Sinan served other sultans, like Selim the Second and Murat the Third and other important dignitaries of the court, including viziers, sultan’s wives or mothers, princes and princesses, among others. For these prestigious clients he designed religious complexes, mosques, staging posts, caravanserais, as well as engineering projects such as roads, bridges and aqueducts. He redefined the cityscape in the capital Istanbul and shaped the landscapes of other towns and centers along the caravan roads of the vast Ottoman Empire.
Led by an expert on Ottoman Architecture and Master Sinan, Luca Orlandi, this interactive seminar will discuss the important role played by architect Sinan to enrich the Ottoman civilization in the 16th century. Tailored to give accurate details and to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased and deep knowledge of an architectural master who is on par with his Western Renaissance counterparts such as Michelangelo or Andrea Palladio.

Fantastic Seminar on Sinan's Ottoman Architecture with Dr Luca Orlandi !

Absolutely one of the best Context Seminars I've attended !!! Perfect mix of scholarly insight, history and art with just the right level of detail. Dr Orlandi is an excellent presenter and I can only hope to see more of his seminars. (Would love to see something about the Genovese community in Istanbul.)

Good review

Very interesting, with historical context. I would have liked a bit more on each of the buildings he showed us - where they are, why built, architectural features. But we got a good overview so happy with that.

Fascinating perspective on this important Ottoman architect

This was a wonderful presentation of Sinan's life and work, highlighted by interesting parallels between his work that of his Italian Renaissance contemporary, Palladio. I look forward to other seminars presented by Lucas Orlandi.
