Seven miles from the north coast of Scotland lies the archipelago of Orkney. At first glance it is a wild, windswept place; the islands are often hidden within the North Sea mists. In recent years, Orkney has become a popular tourist destination and guests who make the journey north are rewarded by spectacular scenery, a wealth of wildlife, and bountiful seas that offer a host of local delicacies. Together we will make a virtual voyage through the North Sea to explore this extraordinary landscape in the company of a local resident and expert guide.

From its many well-preserved remains of mysterious stone circles dating back to the Stone Age to the imposing Viking cathedral of St. Magnus and the somber coastal batteries of the Second World War – we'll journey back through time as we unravel these archaeological puzzle pieces from the islands' storied past. And though Orkney may be firmly rooted in the past, it also has eyes on the future. Renewable energy powers many necessities for those who live here from cars to heating and (soon) even inter-island air transport.

Led by a local expert on Orkney archaeology, who has published several books on the region, this Conversation will explore the traces of ancient lives to be seen across the Orkney landscape. Up-to-date research will help us to understand the key sites. We shall also consider present-day life in this remote archipelago and the exciting developments that have led to a new depiction as ‘The Energy Isles’. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an understanding of past, present, and future in Orkney.
