Do you have the nerve (and a clear conscience) to meet dreadful monsters and mighty deities on your path to eternal life? Join Egyptologist Jade Bajeot to learn how Ancient Egyptians prepared for the afterlife and the texts they used as guide books for their journey to the beyond.

For the ancient Egyptians, the afterlife was a mirror-image of terrestrial life, but access to that realm was not quickly earned. To take their place in what the Egyptians called the “Field of Reeds” after their death and resurrection, the deceased had to face a journey through the underworld, and there were tests to pass and dangers to avoid. For this reason, the Egyptians provided the dead with religious texts that contained descriptions of the netherworld, instructions, and spells that would help them pass through unscathed.

Depending on the historical period and the deceased’s social status, there were different texts, such as the Pyramid Texts, the Coffin Texts, the Book of the Dead, the Book of Gates, among others, that were used as guide books to the afterlife. They could be depicted on tomb walls, on coffins, and papyrus. We will discuss the different texts, their structure, and contents during this seminar to understand how the Egyptians conceived the afterlife and how the instructions in these texts could help them during the frightening journey. In particular, we will see the royal books of the New Kingdom that were represented in the tombs of the Valley of the Kings, such as the Book of Gates and the Amduat. For this purpose, we will virtually visit the 3D reconstruction of Seti I’s tomb, one of the most beautiful of the Valley of the Kings, to see these representations in their original context and understand how they were located. We will make the same journey that the pharaoh took in the netherworld; we will face the same tests, we will experience his fears and, if we are brave enough and follow all instructions, we will rise again and take our place among the gods.

Led by an expert on Egyptology, Jade Bajeot, this interactive seminar will help you better understand how Ancient Egyptians conceived of the afterlife, and what their funerary texts tell us about their beliefs. Designed to inform curiosity and future travels, participants will come away with increased knowledge of Ancient Egyptian religion.

Jade Bajeot has an MA in Egyptology, where her dissertation focus was on the ancient Egyptian fortification system. For her PhD in Archaeology she specialized in the prehistory of Egypt, in particular the unpublished data of the Italian excavations carried out in the predynastic site of Maadi (Cairo). During her PhD she spent six months in Cairo, at the French Institute of Archaeology (Ifao) where she had the opportunity to visit several archaeological sites. In 2014 she started to collaborate with the French mission that digs at Tell el-Iswid, a predynastic site located in the Nile Delta. She still works at Tell el-Iswid as a specialist in ceramic technology. She also had the opportunity to work at Tell el-Fara’in/Buto and Tell el-Samara (Nile Delta). She has published several papers on the subject and her PhD thesis has been published as a monograph.

Hieroglyphics now making some sense to me!

This was an excellent course that finally made the funerary texts meaningful. Seeing the same texts in different tombs helped me understand the purpose of them and what the symbols and vignettes portrayed mean. Very much fun.
