In this seminar, you will learn the overview of Zen Buddhism, a brief history of Zen, how to find Zen spirit in Japanese culture, tips for Zen meditation, and how to practice Zen in daily life.

Zen is a branch of Buddhism that grew in east Asia, especially in Japan. We will start with an overview of Zen Buddhism:  origins in India, spread to China, and deeply embedded in Japan, we will learn the history and core values of Zen. Next, we will discuss the role of Zen in Japanese culture and art. Kintsugi, the art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer mixed with powdered gold, Shojin-ryori, temple buddhist cuisine, and Noh, one of the oldest dance dramas, all of them originated in Zen of their simplicity makes them uniquely Japanese.

Finally, we will experience Zen spirituality. Dōgen (1200-1253), credited with disseminating Zen philosophy widely, taught not only Zen meditation but also how to bring Zen spirituality to daily life. We will learn how to practice Zen with easily implementable tips. Understanding Zen allows us to truly appreciate Japanese life and culture.
