This conversation will cover the experience of wartime Milan, with a focus on the Resistance by the part of citizens and partisans in the 1940s. We’ll discuss resistance groups and their connection to both Nazis and Fascists before the arrival of the Anglo-American troops in April 1945. This conversation will address World War Two Milan as we journey through the years, the bombings on the city of Milan and the official great 'Liberation Day' of 25 April 1945.
We’ll also focus on the incredible story of Pino Lella, a 17-year-old child during the war (and a 94-year-old hero today). He risked his life to smuggle Jews out of Mussolini’s Italy, before spying on the Nazis while employed as a driver for a German general. We’ll learn how he helped many Jewish and refugees flee to Switzerland throughout the war, inspiring the novel 'Beneath a Scarlet Sky' by author Mark Sullivan.
Led by art historian and consultant Laura Benitti, this interactive discussion will enlighten participants about wartime Milan. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a better understanding of this turbulent period during Milan’s history and the impact that individuals had in shaping history.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.

WWII Milan with Laura Benitti

WOW -- this seminar went so fast! So much information in such an understandable way. It is a terribly sad story but Laura Benitti explained the context and the history around what happened and really tried to make a complicated story much more understandable. Such a moving story, so sensitively done. Grazie!

It’s an interesting and, quite frankly, easy way to learn about a wide variety of interesting topics.

Loved traveling to Milan with Laura while in isolation. It was a very informative program.
