Join Hilary Bockham to meet William Blake, one of the most visionary of all English artists and poets, and uncover the mastermind behind the pen. We’ll learn how he fits into the history of late eighteenth century and early nineteenth-century England. We'll discuss his perception at the time, and we’ll explore the impact of his vision and art through the ages. Discover the man whose playthings were, as Alexander Gilchrist described the “sun, moon, and stars, the heavens and the earth".

William Blake (1757-1827) worked single-mindedly throughout his life to bring about a change both in the social order and in the minds of the people through his words and his art. Yet we’ll learn how during his lifetime he was mocked, ignored, and pitied. His only solo art exhibition had just one mention in the press, which described him as an 'unfortunate lunatic'. But, far from being an isolated mystic, Blake lived and worked in the teeming, smoky, and newly industrialized London of the early 1800s. We’ll explore how his vision and his art were appreciated by just a handful of people who helped him to stay alive. Today he is considered as one of (if not the) most visionary of all English poets, inspiring many youthful artists to listen to their hearts and to follow in his passionate footsteps.

Led by Context expert, Hilary Bockham, this interactive seminar will explore the life and work of the celebrated poet, William Blake. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of his life, works, and legacy.

Hilary Bockham reminds me of one of my high school English teacher- in the BEST way! This was such a concentrated but deep dive into William Blake. All of Ms. Bockham's slides were relevant, and enjoyed her reading all the Blake poems outloud. Blakes' artwork is so incredibly vivid and detailed, which we all got to see and enjoy. Very enjoyable!

Excellent presentation

I’ve enjoyed a number of Ms. Bockham’s lectures. I was particularly impressed with this Blake presentation, Even attempting a cogent intro to Blake’s beliefs and works is an enormous task but she pulled it off admirably. Definitely whets the appetite for more. If she were willing to delve deeper in a subsequent lecture (or two), I’d sign on.
