Led by Dr. Simon Gregor, this lecture will take you on a virtual walk through Stepney and Whitechapel in the heart of London’s East End to discover the impact of ordinary people, from doctors to councillors, seamen to rent collectors, and brewers to gangsters. This lecture will lead to a better understanding of the influence from this side of London.
Simon has had a lifelong interest in history and literature, and loves sharing his passion for these subjects with others. He took his first degree in English Literature at the University of Cambridge in the UK, before going on to complete his PhD in history at the University of Wolvehampton. He has worked extensively as a tour guide in London, across the UK, and in mainland Europe, focussing in particular on C19 and C20 history. His doctoral thesis focussed on the commemoration of the First World War, and as a Brit in the process of emigrating to the USA, he is developing a niche interest in the role of the United States in that conflict. In the literary world, Simon has lectured on subjects as diverse as Shakespeare, the Brontes, Romantic Poetry, and the poetry of war. Whatever subject he is speaking about, he enjoys finding the human stories behind the sweep of history.

Dr. Gregor is an enthusiastic host. His interest and knowledge of this less touristed part of East London is an enjoyable way to experience a part of London we haven’t seen.
