With its stunning, jagged coastline, impressive castles, and beautiful beaches, Wales is a tourist destination on the rise. Not only that, it is becoming increasingly popular as a place to live for English people with its wilderness appeal (and lower property prices!). In this seminar, we will explore Wales by focusing on its history of opposition to England, its rich literary culture, and its stunning, partially human-made landscapes.

This talk aims to provide a broad introduction to Wales, a country steeped in its unique language, mythology, and poetry. But Wales is, of course, inextricably linked to its neighbors, both through the industrial revolution and hundreds of years of opposition to England. We will look at Welsh literature, art, and history to provide a mere sample of what this small country has to offer!

John Owen is a historian based in Berlin who specialises in German history. He has however been visiting Wales since he was born and hails from a Welsh family. This interactive seminar will introduce its participants to a country he loves and for which he feels a powerful sense of hiraeth (Welsh for nostalgia) to inform and provoke a sense of curiosity for future travels to Britain's most underrated nation.

John studied History and German at the University of Oxford, eventually specializing in German-Jewish history and the history of the Third Reich. He has been coming to Berlin since he was a teenager and moved to the city permanently a couple of years ago. The tangibility of history, especially that of the twentieth century, never ceases to thrill him in Berlin.

On he top of my bucket list now

This was very inspiring and I expect I’ll follow up the lecture with a little further study. Now I hope to walk a portion of the Pembroke Coastal Path, although I don’t think I could do the entire path, it looks like fantastic coastal scenery. To learn more about the 20th C life in Wales I’ve also put The Life of Rebecca Jones by Angharad Price on my reading list.

Wales: From the Roman Invasions to the Brexit Results

Mr. Owen clearly knows and loves Wales. He conveyed his deep knowledge of Welsh history and culture in an interesting and clear manner. At the end of our session during the chat, he was even able to answer questions about specific trails to hike in order to best see the countryside. I feel as though I learned a good deal about this unique country in Mr. Owen’s lecture.
