The history of the Vikings is a long and intriguing one. Who were the Vikings? Where did they come from? How did they expand and where to? This conversation seeks to answer these questions through a snapshot into Viking history. We will focus on the Northmen’s expansion into Russia, the establishment of a political entity Kievan Rus, the first Russian political entity, as well as their expansion into England, Ireland (marked by the Viking foundation of Dublin), the delta of the Seine, and other areas in Europe.

In the late ninth century, Norsemen and Danes began a more than two centuries expansion. The so-called Vikings (a name which they themselves used to identified their war-like voyages as opposed to trade and settling, though sometimes the two were combined) were the first true representatives of a global age. We'll learn of their rapid expansion into the Baltic area and into Russia, marked by the foundation of Kiev. The Northmen sought to reach the Black Sea, Constantinople, and Baghdad. We'll discuss how, as a counterpart to their expansion to the east, the Vikings established footholds in England, Ireland, France, some areas of the Mediterranean, Iceland, Greenland, and the Americas. Their impact on western European civilization was profound.

Led by an expert in the history of the region of Scandinavia and beyond Dr. Teo Ruiz, this seminar will awaken our understanding of the rich history of the Vikings and the scope of their voyages to a region of the world during the Viking Age. Designed to inform curiosity and educate, this conversation will deepen our knowledge of this fascinating period of history.

Appreciating the Viking Culture

Dr. Ruiz provided a thorough and highly informative view of the Vikings, their sea culture, and their expansion and conquests in the 800s though the 1100s. It is extremely exciting to find various sources of information coinciding and reaffirming one another in support of an understanding of that culture.

Insight into oft-overlooked history

Dr. Ruiz really knows his stuff and covered a huge amount of history during his talk. History can be dry especially in a slide presentation, but Dr. Ruiz really made it come alive. Appreciated that he didn't just read his slides but spoke directly about the topics.

Learned so much!

Even though I taught the History of English to students and covered a lot of material, I still learned so much with Teo. He was just awesome.
