For the first time in 220 years, the Rijksmuseum will be home to an exclusive Vermeer retrospective from February 10th to June 4th of this year. The elusive painter, Joannes Vermeer (1632 - 1675) of Delft, only ever created a small number of paintings, and today we know of only thirty-six works. His iconic style, along with his exclusivity, has helped make Vermeer one of the most interesting and sought-after painters in history.

The Rijksmuseum's exclusive exhibition will feature twenty-eight of his thirty-six works all in one location, truly making it a unique opportunity never before seen in the art world, and not to be seen again for some time. To best prepare for a visit to this exhibit, or to travel through it from the comfort of your home, your expert, art historian, Dr. Alette Fleischer, will walk you through all twenty-eight of Vermeer's works as well as the organization and key thematic points of the exhibit in an in-depth virtual visit.

Additionally, Dr. Fleischer will dive into a special exhibition in Vermeer's own hometown Furthermore it will inform you on a special exhibition in Vermeer's hometown of Delft at the Princenhof Museum. This exhibit will present works by Vermeer's contemporaries, alongside objects commonly found in Vermeer's paintings: ceramics and carpets, as well as archival objects and personal documents. This seminar, led by art historian and 17th century expert, Dr. Alette Fleischer, will prepare you for your upcoming visit to Amsterdam, and gives the stay-at-homers a unique virtual experience of a lifetime.

Amsterdam-born Alette Fleischer has a degree in Art History and a PhD in 17th Dutch History, focusing on gardens, science, and technology. She has curated several exhibitions, publishes articles, presents lectures, and a proud Context Expert. For Context Travel, Alette has led the Rijksmuseum tours many times. Motto: staying curious is key for being a good historian.

Spectacular!

Alette presented a spectacular tour of the Vermeer exhibit—I felt like I was at the Rijismuseum with a most knowledgeable guide. This is an experience that could not be duplicated even if I was able to go to Amsterdam and see the Vermeer paintings myself.

Vermeer Tour

The lecture seemed so personal. Alette's demeanor was very relaxed and made it feel like we were sitting around her livingroom with her. I learned a great deal about the exhibition and the individual paintings. What was most helpful for me was learning how the work was presented and how I would walk though it.
