Join Sabry Amroussi for a deep-dive into the world of Vincent Van Gogh and an exploration of the many painters who inspired and influenced the Dutch post-impressionist master.

Vincent van Gogh is often seen as a troubled and unique genius, out of touch with the outside art world, but the truth is quite the opposite. A true intellectual, well aware of the latest trends in literature and art, as well as having a profound knowledge of art history, Vincent drew his inspiration from many sources. This seminar will try to reconstruct Vincent's 'ideal museum', pairing his own works with artists he admired or was inspired by. We will be surprised by the painter's eclectic taste.  Van Gogh’s heroes ranged from Old Masters such as Rembrandt, Ruisdael, and Van Goyen to academic contemporaries like Hubert von Herkomer and Jean-Léon Gérôme. His great role models included masters such as Millet and Delacroix as well as his contemporaries Toulouse-Lautrec, Bernard, Signac, and Seurat. Works by these artists will be shown together with Van Gogh's own pictures, allowing viewers to see the connection between inspiration and the final product.

Led by an expert on Dutch Golden Age painting, Sabry Amroussi, this interactive seminar will explore the internal world of Vincent Van Gogh and the artists who inspired him. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of Van Gogh’s genius.

Sabry Amroussi is an art historian and writer living and working in Amsterdam. He specializes in the art of the Dutch Golden Age, mainly in the works of Rembrandt and his school, and has a keen interest in the Jewish history of Amsterdam. As a true omnivore when it comes to art, culture, and even cuisine, he has worked with and for major museums and collectors, such as the LACMA, Rijksmuseum, van Gogh Museum and the P de Boer collection in Amsterdam. As a guide for Context, he is eager to share this knowledge in real life, always with a big scoop of humor, ofter intermingling art with social life, cuisine, and history.

Sabry is an inspiring, gifted, knowledgable, talented speaker, and extremely well-versed in his art subjects. His enjoyment of the topic and his enthusiasm bubble over the screen and bring the topic to life. Learned so much from him and enjoyed every moment. Look forward to more of his lectures! Thank you!

There are many ways to approach an artist’s work. This highly entertaining lecture approaches Van Gogh’s work using those artists who strongly influenced him. Some if the material duplicates other lectures by Sabry but it useful to revisit theee subjects.

This was a fabulous seminar! I loved learning about the early and late influences on Van Gogh and the many paintings that he traced/copied or used as inspiration for his own paintings.

I am a museum docent in Columbus OhioUSA. I have been studying art history for a very long time. This was one of the best lectures I have ever heard. Professor Amroussi's talk was jampacked with amazing stories about Vincent. Each time he made a connection to works by another artist it inspired me to want to learn even more! I look forward to hearing more lectures by professor Amroussi and hope to take a tour with him the next time we visit Amsterdam.
