In honor of the Art Institute of Chicago's special exhibition, Van Gogh and the Avant-Garde: The Modern Landscape (opening May 14), Sabry Amroussi will once again take us on an adventure with the greatest Dutch master of the 19th century.

Van Gogh intensely adored nature and Earth's landscape, and his influence on fellow painters and artists is not to be understated. This talk will take you on an adventure through the countryside, from van Gogh's humble beginnings in Holland, through his glorious and extremely productive years in Arles, to his bitter end in Auvers. Also showing works by fellow artists like Georges Seurat, Paul Signac, Emile Bernard, and Charles Angrand, Sabry Amroussi will show you the tremendous meaning van Gogh had on landscape painting. As an absolute  highlight of this talk, Sabry will also discuss a masterpiece by van Gogh, hidden in a private collection in Amsterdam, (the wheat field pictured here), using the actual work to explain van Gogh's virtuoso handling of paint. This is sure to be a unique and utterly moving experience.

Sabry Amroussi is an art historian and writer living and working in Amsterdam. He specializes in the art of the Dutch Golden Age, mainly in the works of Rembrandt and his school, and has a keen interest in the Jewish history of Amsterdam. He lectures and teaches on both subjects and gives art historical tours all across Europe. As a true omnivore when it comes to art, culture, and even cuisine, he has worked with and for major museums and collectors, such as the LACMA, Rijksmuseum, van Gogh Museum and the P de Boer collection in Amsterdam. As a guide for Context, he is eager to share this knowledge in real life, always with a big scoop of humor, ofter intermingling art with social life, cuisine, and history.

Great vivacious talk, well organized

So much information in such a lively talk. Loved how well organized it was -- very easy to understand the evolution of van Gogh's style as a result. Also really liked the addition of videos with Sabry holding some Van Gogh originals.
