Everyone knows Machu Picchu and Iguaza Falls. But many travelers skip Bolivia on their South American itinerary, or simply make a brief stop-off at Lake Titicaca. They’re missing out.

Landlocked Bolivia may be the highest and most isolated country in the Americas, but it also offers a surprisingly rich diversity of landscape and culture — from the Amazon rainforest to Andean mountains via the salt flats of Uyuni. It also quietly guards a series of little-known stories about its connections to figures from our history and popular culture, including Che Guevara and Butch Cassidy. We take a journey through “The Nepal of South America” to uncover the legends and landscapes that will change your perspective of a lesser-visited Latin gem.

Led by an expert travel writer and guide, David Atkinson, this interactive seminar will explore the history and culture of Bolivia. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the hidden secrets of this special country.

David Atkinson is a UK-based travel writer and tourist guide. He is the author of the guidebook, Bolivia The Bradt Guide and a regular contributor to newspapers and magazines. During guidebook research in Bolivia, he enjoyed hiking forgotten trails, perfecting his Spanish, and sampling surprisingly good wines from the Tarija region.

Bolivia

David gave a very interesting talk about areas of Bolivia often not seen by regular tourists. Not having been to Bolivia it would have been nice if he could have included some of the major tourist destinations.

Program content disappointed me.

David did a fine job presenting the off-the-beaten-track trails that he had personally explored in Bolivia. But I myself was very disappointed that the program did not present or even touch on the interesting history, unique and colorful culture or diverse natural beauty of Bolivia. I guess "Unexpected Bolivia" did not meet my expectations. Maybe Context can present another program on "Interesting, Colorful Bolivia".

A little light on content

I was disappointed. I was hoping to see lots of pictures of Bolivia, but Mr. Atkinson showed very few - and many of them were of signs. He went to a few tourist highlights. I'd have preferred more about everyday life in Bolivia, or history of Bolivia. I guess perhaps that travel seminars are not what I want.
