The largest country in Europe, Ukraine consists of several distinct regions with unique cultures and histories. This seminar outlines the complex and beautiful cultural landscape of this country and its population of 40 million citizens.

We begin with an introduction to the Crimean Peninsular – one of the oldest known continuously-inhabited areas of the world. From there, we will virtually explore the beautiful city of Lviv; known as the city of the stone lions and the former capital of the Galician–Volhynian Kingdom. Next, we will learn about the multi-cultural Odessa's vibrant Jewish history. This area once constituted the Jewish Pale of Settlements when Ukraine was a part of the Russian Empire. We will proceed to discover the Hutzul region in the Carpathian Mountains, where local populations preserved their musical native culture influenced by their Hungarian neighbors. Our time together will conclude in Kyiv – a modern European city and the cradle of East-Slavic civilization.

Led by an expert on Eastern European culture and history, Dr. Nina Wieda, this Conversation will illuminate the regional diversity of Ukraine. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the rich and diverse cultural and historical landscape of Ukraine.
