Explore one of Italy's most visited museums with a local art historian in this immersive introductory Uffizi seminar. From Gothic cathedrals to Renaissance gardens, the works of art conserved in the Uffizi evoke the history of the city where Renaissance was born, while displaying the development of Western art through the works of its most representative masters. We will get up close and (artistically) personal with the masterpieces of Italian art and we will pay a visit to the great European masters collected by the Medici rulers of Florence.

Paintings by Giotto, Masaccio, Filippo Lippi, Leonardo, Raffaello, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, and Artemisia Gentileschi, among others, are not only incredible testimonies to the greatness of these artists but visual documents of a world that gave birth to modernity. We'll discuss how paint, wood, canvas, and gold, shaped by the will of a patron and the skills of artistic genius can still vividly narrate to onlookers and viewers incredible stories. As we analyze and discuss a curated selection of artistic masterpieces, we'll learn visual tales from past societies, cultures, and politics, helping us understand our present.

Led by art historian and native Florentine, Alessandra Becucci, this seminar will explore the vast collection of the famed Uffizi Gallery. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will emerge with a clearer understanding of certain works of art and a solid introductory seminar ahead of any future Florentine visit.

This conversation is the first in a two-part series. Each seminar can be joined independently and in any order.

Born and raised in Florence, Alessandra has a degree in art history from the University of Florence with a specialization in seventeenth-century painting. She obtained an MRes from the European University Institute in Florence, where she defended her Ph.D in history, focusing on the patronage of Tuscan nobility in Europe during the seventeenth century. She has been teaching art history and Italian for several years in various schools and institutions in Florence.

This conversation is suitable for all ages

Wonderful Coverage of the Highlights of the Uffizi by Alessandra Becuci

Alessandra did a wonderful job covering the history of the Uffizi, both as a building and as a museum. She also did a fascinating job on the art work, and added greatly to my understanding, even though I have gone on several tours in the Uffizi in years past. There were some technical problems with internet connection early on.

Better than being there. I know it's hard to believe but true.

Dr. Alessandra Becucci does it again. Her lecture on the history of the Uffizi building and it's most treasured works within is another outstanding lecture. I visited the Ufizzi about five years ago and stood in front of each of these masterpieces. But Dr. Bucucci's knowledge of the history behind the the painters, and/or the models is fascinating! Also the part I really like about her research and her visuals is the way she unfolded how the skills of the various artists unfolded over time and evolved to the great level of skill, perspective, and details over time. The close ups she uses to make these points are things you can't really get when you stand behind the ropes at the gallery itself. This lecture brought back the memories of my actual visit and took my understanding off these paintings to the next level. Grazie!

Outstanding presenter - loved part 1

Alessandra is a fabulous presenter. Even though I've been to the Uffizi multiple times, I still got so much out of the talk. Sorry we had the technical difficulties.
