Trains first ran beneath the streets of London in 1863. Originally there were separate, often fiercely rival, companies. Then in 1933, it all came together as London Transport. And the boss, Frank Pick, who had worked his way up through one of those companies, declared "London Transport is or will be a work of art." He'd already commissioned a font, which was then added to the Roundel, creating one of the most recognizable brand logos in the world. This conversation will explore how Pick's principles shaped the station buildings, moving from oxblood tiled arches to Holden drums and more recently the cathedrals of the Jubilee line extension.

We’ll celebrate the brilliance of the map (don’t call it a map, it’s not a map, it’s a diagram!) which has inspired transport graphic design right across the globe. We’ll look at artworks, both those commissioned as a permanent part of the station infrastructure and those that are more temporary. Being a virtual tour we can skip between far-flung stations and journey across the years to appreciate the details that Londoners overlook.

This seminar is led by Fiona, a London Blue Badge guide who specializes in the Underground. Growing up the tube was her ticket to explore all of London, and she now relishes the range of stories to be found in this microcosm of life. This interactive seminar will inspire participants to look more closely at the mundane, functional elements of life through the lens of the London Underground. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased appreciation of the design choices behind everyday objects.

Fiona Lukas is an award-winning London Blue and Green Badge Guide. She originally studied literature and drama, and then acting and directing. She delights in bizarre and random, and loves showing people the stuff that is hidden in plain sight. Behind every object there is a story, and Fiona is at heart, a storyteller.

The Tube: Art, Architecture and Design is a wonderful seminar

I have traveled the Tube numerous times but rarely paid much attention to the the art , architecture and design of the stations, the tiles, the front over of the diagram, etc. etc. Fiona's seminar was excellent, giving me a much broader view of this marvelous transport system.

Outstanding seminar

Fiona is one of the best tour guides I've listened to - and I'm up to probably 20 of these Context sessions during the Pandemic. I did walking tours in several different cities with Context, and they are always good. I have lived in the UK - in Oxford - on and off over ten years. I know the Tube well. Fiona brought it to life - its' history, the major players, how it was designed, how it was built, how it has evolved since roughly 1863. I think her illustrations and her stories that went along with them were terrific. I am recommending this to all of my friends. I can't wait to get the info she said she would forward with further information, books, and video.

This was a terrific seminar.... one of the best we have taken with Context. Fiona's presentation was organized and informative and her visuals were great,. We have been to London and used the tube numerous times but gained a new appreciation of it after this seminar. We would love to take a tour with Fiona on a future trip to London

Top-notch addition to Context lineup

Fiona is a great addition to the Context stable of experts. She was knowledgeable (of course), thorough, engaging, and kept a great pace. Content was very accessible both to those who have been to London and those who hope to. She displayed a range of knowledge in several arenas: art, architecture, urban planning, social history, etc. She also answered questions thoughtfully. I would definitely attend more of her seminars.

More interesting than I e pected

Expected more art adorning the stations as in Russia but the amazing thing is the planning, the building and expansion of the first underground system in the world,
