The Trojan war is a story that has captivated audiences and inspired artists for millennia. Legendary heroes, quarreling gods, and human fates are all essential parts of this enduring epic. During this conversation, we will explore the story of the Trojan war, the attempt at finding the site of ancient Troy, and the discoveries made there.

The Trojan war is the subject of Homer’s Iliad, an epic poem with roots in old oral tradition that begins its narrative with the war in full swing. We will look at the events leading up to the war, the key factions and events of the war, and its conclusion with the Trojan horse. The archaeological site of Troy attracted famous visitors already in antiquity, visitors looking to visit the site of the battle. Its location was eventually forgotten until a wealthy German businessman called Heinrich Schliemann made it his goal to find and excavate the site of the legendary Trojan war. What did Schliemann find, and did he prove the existence of the Trojan war?

The story of the war continues to resonate with modern audiences, from a Hollywood movie to tv shows and a few recent books. We will finish this seminar with a discussion on how new generations find new ways of looking at this age-old story.

Led by an expert on Greek religion and archaeology, Dr. Helena Meskanen, this interactive seminar will offer a deep dive into the world of gods, heroes, and archaeology. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a deeper understanding of the myths and realities of ancient Troy and the legendary war.

A nice overview, focusing on the mythology

Dr Meskanen is always excellent and this was an interesting overview of the mythology and material culture associated with Troy. As someone who already knows the stories and a little about the site, I was hoping for more detail about the archaeology and a greater focus on the Iliad. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable 90 minutes.

Thank you!

Thank you for an informative, well presented, and fun lecture! I saw Troy: Fall of a City which was well done and well acted and it spurred me on to want to learn more about the Iliad. Not sure what you think of that film but it appealed to me as a nonacademic! And now I have your wonderful lecture that has helped me move to a more academic understanding of this classic story.
