The Vatican Museums are a treasure chest of the Pope's personal collections – absolute masterpieces from antiquity to the present day, with the lesser-known collection of Modern art that includes works of Matisse, Dalì, Chagall and more. For many visitors to the Vatican City, the Sistine Chapel is the first thing that comes to mind.
Our conversation will closely examine highlight components of this majestic venue – such as the Sistine Chapel and Raphael Rooms, but will also provide an up-close look at many of the museums' best features – normally too crowded to linger in front of. Together we will enjoy a grand tour of the collection's iconic masterpieces, going behind the ropes to take a view of these exquisite architectural features, paintings, and sculptures.
Beginning from the ancient masterpieces such as the Belvedere Apollo and the statue of Augustus and Laocoon, our seminar pauses to consider each work's delicate craftsmanship and painstaking conservation. We will examine the great paintings and tapestries designed by Raphael, the Frescoes of Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel, and move into the apartment of Julius II – who was better known as Raphael Stanze.
Led by an expert on Ancient Roman Topography, as well as History and Conservation of the Artistic Heritage, Livia Galante, this Conversation will focus on the Vatican Museums. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with increased comprehension of the history of the place as well as have suggestions of the absolutes “must-see” of these collections.
If you're ready to explore further, we invite you to join our in-person Private Tours of Rome and Virtual Tours of Italy.

What a fantastic lecture!

Thank you Livia for walking us through the Vatican Museum's masterpieces. Love for this lecture to be divided in 2 or 3 parts, so I can learn more about other masterpieces in the collection. You are a fabulous presenter, I look forward to attending future lectures

An extraordinary Vatican collection

Livia Galante's talent for saying significant things about the works of art she discusses continues to be shown here. While introducing us to the range of art works--paintings, sculptures, tapestries - and even a staircase, she made us all look forward to a more intense exploration of the treasures of the Vatican.

Excellent introduction to Vatican

Ms. Galante gave a highlights tour within a beautifully-organized framework of spatial organization of the sprawling galleries. It was not merely highlights, but the stories of selected works; narratives within the artwork, and the artists too. It really enhancing understanding beyond what the eye can absorb.
