Join us as we learn about the must-see highlights of Northern Portugal, led by a local expert.

Following an introduction to the region's political timeline and cultural traditions, we will highlight the must-see destinations across the region. Our local expert will virtually guide us through several UNESCO World Heritage sites, such as the historical Center of Porto and Guimarães, the Prehistoric Rock Art Sites of Côa Valley, and the Douro Valley Wine Region. Together we will also experience the musical traditions, artisan crafts, annual festivals, stunning landscapes, and delicious cuisine available to enjoy.

From there, we continue our exploration of coastal cities and medieval towns inland – and learn about northern Portugal's distinctive architectural styles. We'll also reach the Granite and Schist rocky areas, with several mountain towns to discover together or stunning beaches with picturesque fishing vernacular architecture. These contrasting landmarks allow us to learn more about the moments in history they've borne witness to – from the Ancient Roman Empire to the origin of Portugal as an independent kingdom; from the process of the Christian Reconquista against the Muslims to the endless conflicts with Castilla/Spain. We will also discover more about the Age of Exploration in the 16th century and the French and British influence in the 18th and 19th centuries. All these cultures have left their mark on this region and made it unique.

Led by an expert on Architecture and Art History, Tiago Miranda Neiva, this interactive seminar will explore the highlights of Portugal's northern region. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a better knowledge of Portuguese history, geography, and culture.

Tiago Miranda Neiva was born and raised in Lisbon. He studied architecture in Rome and worked later in distinct offices in Portugal and Spain. For several years he was Professor of Arts and Art History, having a Master's degree in Teaching of Visual Arts. He is currently working towards a PhD focused on the Art and Architecture of al-Andalus: the confluence between the Arab, Jewish and Christian medieval world. In recent years he has been working as a tour guide in his hometown, seeking to show and reveal its most intimate secrets through an authentic and passionate local vision.

Why I want to go to Portugal!

Although I suddenly know people who either have just been or are planning planning a trip to Portugal, I didn’t know much about the country. Now I really want to see it for myself

Loved this overview of Northern Portugal

Tiago Nieva presented a lot of information. He was thorough in what he presented, brought in historical and cultural aspects, included typical foods of the region, and imbued the facts with his enthusiasm, perhaps love, of Portugal. Very informative and enjoyable.
