Did you know that Andalusia – whose name comes from al-Andalus (the Medieval Islamic Iberian Peninsula) is a region that covers the southern half of modern-day Spain? Together we will explore this highly diverse geographic landscape. We venture from the wetlands of the Doñana National Park, where its great river Guadalquivir flows, through the golden sandy beaches of the Mediterranean Coast, to the high mountain ranges with snow such as the Sierra Nevada or the only desert on the European continent, located in Almeria.

Alongside these remarkable geographic landscapes and treasured Natural Parks, such as Donãna, Andalusia is proud of its traditions. We will learn more about popular cuisines and historical narratives–aspects of daily life that connect the modern residents to ancient civilizations. Many elements of local archaeological and architectural history have gained a UNESCO World Heritage designation and essential aspects of local culture, such as Flamenco or religious processions, were awarded as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

In our seminar, we will explore the most popular destinations in Andalusia, from picturesque villages such as the “Pueblo Blancos” or cave houses; to Renaissance gems hidden among plains and olive groves, such as Baeza and Úbeda; coastal cities once linked to commerce and today to leisure and tourism, such as Malaga or Almeria. From there, we will learn more about the region's historical legacy in cities such as Seville, Cordoba, and Granada–heirs of civilizations as relevant as the Roman, Muslim, or Christian. All of this, of course, is seasoned with good music, delicious cuisine, and rich wines. Together these ingredients make Andalusia one of the must-see regions of Spain for any curious traveler.

Led by an expert on Architecture and Art History, Tiago Miranda Neiva, this interactive seminar will explore the South Spanish Andalusia region. After a first introduction of the History, Traditions, Landscape, and general tips for travelers, we will visit and highlight some of the most relevant places and experiences that make this region so unique and special. Designed to inspire curiosity and future travels, participants will come away with a better knowledge of Spanish Andalusia.
